About Music, Art, & Dance Therapy

Music Therapy

The American Music Therapy Association states that music therapy is “the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.” For more than 40 years (since 1975), our music therapists have impacted the lives of clients, from children to adults, veterans to the elderly. Music therapy may help individuals develop healthy stress management options, enhance interpersonal relationships, boost self-esteem, increase fine/gross motor control, and increase social and emotional functioning.

Art Therapy

The American Art Therapy Association describes art therapy as “a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.” Art Therapy uses the creative process—drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms—to develop
interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, make healthy choices, discover inner strength and resources, and achieve insight.

Dance/Movement Therapy

Based on the empirically supported premise that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected, the American Dance Therapy Association defines dance/movement therapy as “the psychotherapeutic use of movement to further the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration of the individual. ”Individual and Group sessions offer opportunities for students with special needs to dance and move in a fun and creative environment that nurtures their developing skills in balance, coordination, orientation, fluidity, endurance,
strength, and range of motion while providing exercises to improve fitness and overall health.
