Anton Arensky was a Russian composer of the 19th century, who composed, among many other works, this lyrical and charming Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor. His main influences were his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as Tchaikovsky, Chopin, and Schumann. He was a professor at the Moscow Conservatory and had Scriabin and Rachmaninoff among his students.

The concert also includes the winter movement of Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, which incorporates quotes from Vivaldi’s “Summer” – since when it’s winter here, it’s summer in Argentina. Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger. His music revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style incorporating elements from jazz and classical music.
