Three New Classes Begin January 2015

ROCHESTER, NY—December 9, 2014—Hochstein is excited to announce three new offerings beginning in January, 2015.

Little Mozarts is for ages 4 and 5, using The Music for Little Mozarts Piano Course written by Christine H. Barden, Gayle Kowalchyk and E. L. Lancaster specifically for the preschool age group. This curriculum provides a balance between the discipline necessary for playing the piano and the enjoyment one receives from the process of music making. This course is taught by popular piano instructor Doleen Hood.

The other two courses are for tweens-adult and take place in our Music Lab with Lab Director and songwriter, Dave Chisholm, of the band “Talking Under Water”. Each focuses on musical exploration and self-expression, "Songwriting: From Idea to Demo" and "Musical Mad Science!". See the descriptions below.

To register for any of these classes, call our main office at 585-454=4596.

Little Mozarts

Doleen Hood, Instructor

18 Thursdays, January 8-May 28

Age 4: Thursdays, 4:00-4:40 pm

Age 5: Thursdays, 5:00-5:40 pm

The irresistible stuffed animals, Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse, assist your child in his/her first introduction and exploration of the piano, and form the core of this innovative and exciting program! Weekly small- group sessions are supplemented by six 20-minute individual lessons during the course of the 18-week session. These individual lessons will be arranged with the teacher and parent and will occur in time slots 20 minutes prior to and following the group class. Parent is expected to attend the last 10 minutes of each group session and to assist the child in practice at home. Each child must purchase a learning packet which includes a lesson book, discovery book, and, of course, Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse! Learning packets will be available for purchase for $50 through the Hochstein School. Acoustic piano (or a digital piano with 88 full-size, weighted keys) in the home is required for piano lessons.

FEE: $20 registration fee; $31* fee per class, payable in 3, six-week installments of $186 each. For students enrolled in Little Mozarts at Hochstein, families pay $45 per quarter for one Music FUNdamentals or Children’s Dance class, and reduced fees for Choir or other ensembles.

Musical Mad Science!

Dave Chisholm, Instructor

6 Saturdays, January 10-February 14, 11:00 am-12:00 pm

Ages 9-adult

What would happen if we slowed down the opening two measures of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony so that they last 5 minutes? What if we took the opening half-second of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and looped it? What is the weirdest sound you can make and how can we use it to make music? The "Mad Scientists" will discover the answers to these questions and more in Musical Mad Science! Under Music Lab Director Dave Chisholm's guidance, fledgling "Mad Scientists" ages 9+ perform experiments in musical creation and deconstruction, and, along the way, learn about the nuts and bolts of musical structure including time signature, tonality, texture, contrast, and rhythm. With this course, Hochstein's Music Lab takes on a whole new meaning!

FEE: $10 registration fee; $84 tuition, $63 for students enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein.

Songwriting: From Idea to Demo

Dave Chisholm, Instructor

6 Wednesdays, January 7-February 11, 7:15-8:15 pm

Ages 13-adult

Everybody loves a good song, whether it's a rocking and riffy Led Zeppelin song, a catchy Beatles tune, or a fun and poppy Taylor Swift number. But what goes into this process? In "Songwriting: From Idea to Demo," songwriter of Rochester rock band "Talking Under Water" Dave Chisholm explores the process of songwriting, including developing lyrics, chord progressions, exploring melodic shape, and finally demoing your creation on GarageBand. If you walk around with a song in your heart, now is the time to get it out!

FEE: $10 registration fee; $84 tuition. For students enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein, tuition is $63.
